Experienced Whiplash & Neck Injury Physiotherapy

Recover from car accidents and sudden impacts. We help you restore neck mobility, reduce pain, and regain your quality of life safely and effectively.

Understanding Whiplash Associated Disorders

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, most commonly occurring during rear-end car collisions or sports impacts. This sudden acceleration and deceleration forcefully overstretches the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the cervical spine.

Symptoms often include neck stiffness, deep aching pain, muscle spasms in the shoulders and upper back, and frequently, cervicogenic headaches originating from the base of the skull.

It is incredibly common for whiplash symptoms to be mild immediately following the accident, only to peak and become highly restrictive 24 to 48 hours later.

The Right Time to Start Your Recovery

Research consistently shows that early, appropriate movement leads to significantly better outcomes than prolonged rest. Seeking assessment immediately after your accident helps prevent acute muscle guarding from developing into chronic, long-term stiffness.

The acute treatment window

Seeking care within the first few days allows us to implement safe, gentle mobility exercises and pain management strategies to calm the irritated tissues before severe stiffness sets in.

Chronic whiplash management

If you have been struggling with neck pain for months following an accident, we shift the focus toward graded exposure and active strengthening to reverse the muscular deconditioning that follows trauma.

Signs your injury requires urgent review

You should seek immediate medical clearance from a doctor if your neck pain is accompanied by neurological red flags, such as sudden numbness, tingling down both arms, dizziness, or difficulty swallowing.

The Value of Expert Clinical Management

The outdated advice of wearing a rigid neck brace and resting in bed has been proven to delay recovery and weaken the neck muscles. Our clinical approach strictly follows current evidence-based guidelines, prioritising active rehabilitation and structural offloading.

Evidence-based active recovery

We guide you through specific, controlled movements that actively restore your range of motion and joint health, preventing the formation of restrictive scar tissue in the neck ligaments.

Advanced objective diagnostics

We carefully measure your cervical spine mobility, postural endurance, and upper body strength, providing objective data to track your recovery progress accurately week by week.

Collaborative medical and insurance care

Whiplash injuries are often complex and stressful. We collaborate closely with your General Practitioner, and if appropriate, can connect you with psychological support to manage any anxiety associated with returning to driving or sport.

Your Tailored Recovery Pathway

A successful recovery plan must be carefully paced to match your tissue healing. We build a progressive rehabilitation framework that respects your pain limits while actively challenging your neck to regain its full capacity.

Symptom Control & Gentle Mobility

We utilise hands-on manual therapy, targeted massage to release severe muscle spasms, and gentle range-of-motion exercises to restore your baseline mobility and help you sleep.

Active Muscle Retraining & Stabilisation

As the acute pain subsides, we prescribe targeted exercises to strengthen the deep neck flexors and postural muscles of the upper back, actively rebuilding your spinal support system.

Functional Restoration & Return to Life

The final stage focuses on building muscular endurance and work-hardening strategies, safely integrating the specific movements required for you to return to your desk, physical job, or chosen sport.

FAQ

How long does whiplash take to heal?

Recovery timelines vary depending on the severity of the impact. Mild to moderate whiplash often resolves significantly within 4 to 12 weeks with active physiotherapy, while more severe tissue damage or joint irritation may require 3 to 6 months of structured rehabilitation.

I was in a car accident. How do I claim this through CTP or Workers Compensation?

If your injury is part of a Compulsory Third Party (CTP) or Workers Compensation insurance claim, we are fully equipped to help. You will need to provide us with a referral from your GP, the details of your insurance company, and the contact information for your assigned case manager so we can facilitate the approval process for your treatment.

Should I wear a neck brace after a car accident?

No. Unless specifically prescribed by a hospital doctor for an unstable spinal fracture, wearing a soft collar or neck brace is no longer recommended. Immobilising the neck causes the muscles to rapidly weaken and stiffen, which ultimately prolongs your pain and delays recovery.

Can a whiplash injury cause headaches?

Yes, it is extremely common. The forceful impact frequently irritates the upper joints of the neck and the suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull, leading to cervicogenic (neck-driven) headaches that radiate over the head.

Is it normal to feel dizzy after a whiplash injury?

Yes, some patients experience cervicogenic dizziness following a neck trauma due to disrupted sensory signals from the injured neck joints. Our physiotherapists can assess and treat this specific symptom alongside your standard neck rehabilitation.
