Dance Physio

What is Dance Physiotherapy?
Dance Physiotherapy is the specialised assessment and management of injuries unique to dancers and artistic athletes. We evaluate extreme ranges of motion, explosive power, and technique demands to keep you performing safely. We also work on improving performance: building your true turnout from your hips, strengthening your feet and ankles for the demands of working with a high demi pointe and developing control using your full range of motion
We assess the difference between your anatomical and functional turnout to improve range safely. This reduces compensatory stress on your knees and lower back.
Our screenings evaluate all the features required for pointework including foot range, foot intrinsic and calf strength, and pelvic stability for pointe readiness. We create individualised Pointe Preparation Programs to ensure your body is physically ready before transitioning onto pointe shoes.
Thorough assessment of hypermobility involves specific screening tools alongside joint-specific testing, proprioception and muscular control around lax joints to assess for Generalised Joint Hypermobility or Ehlers Danos Syndrome. Management focuses on building strength, neuromuscular control, and pain management to support the joints safely, allowing dancers to use their range without compromising stability
At Zone 34 Ultimo, our Active Female Hub brings elite dance medicine directly to performers. We combine objective force testing technology with deep industry experience to protect your artistic longevity.
Led by Nicole Baer (https://www.ballet.physio/) our clinicians have extensive experience supporting dancers from The Australian Ballet and major musical theatre productions. We understand the high-performance demands of full-time training and stage schedules.
We utilise VALD dynamometry to measure intrinsic foot, calf, and hip strength. Objective data ensures your rehabilitation and pre-pointe goals are backed by measurable benchmarks.
We communicate closely with your dance teachers, choreographers, and artistic directors. This ensures your rehabilitation plan aligns seamlessly with performance schedules and studio expectations

FAQ
Scoliosis should not stop you dancing. Assessment includes postural analysis, measurements and evaluation of how the curve affects alignment, strength and range during dance-specific movements. We determine whether further assessment or imaging is warranted. Management typically involves a targeted strengthening and postural control program, delivered in collaboration with the dancer's specialist or other relevant healthcare providers to guide safe training and technique modifications.
It is a comprehensive 60-minute specialist screening evaluating ankle range, calf strength, intrinsic foot power, and core control to determine if a dancer is physically ready for pointe work.
Please wear a leotard or tight-fitting dance wear that allows us to observe your hips and spine clearly. Bring your ballet flats, pointe shoes, or specific dance footwear for functional assessment.
Yes. We create targeted conditioning programs that build joint stability and neuromuscular control, allowing hypermobile dancers to safely control their extreme range of motion.
